Gough, 1817-1886. Born in London. Sent to America at age 12 to learn a trade. Once in America, John lost employment and was continually in debt. When the death of his mother occurred and his employment problems continued, Gough turned to drinking. Soon after Gough realized what a mess his life was becoming because of the alcohol, a Temperance advocate approached him and convinced Gough to sign a pledge and come to a meeting. At this meeting he made his first speech on Temperance and signed a pledge to totally abstain from alcohol. He began to tell his story, and became one of the most famous temperance "Speachers" of his time. During his career he delivered some 9,000 lectures to more than 9 million people in America, Canada, England, Scotland and Ireland. After his death in 1886 the New York Times claimed he was one of the best known public speakers here and in Great Britain and one their most influencial social reformers.Contents:HABIT ITS POWER, USE, AND ABUSE; HOW TO SUBDUE A TYRANT AND SECURE A FRIEND; TO YOUNG MEN SOWING THE WIND AND REAPING THE WHIRLWIND; A TALE OF RUIN, REMORSE, AND DEATH; WHO ARE THE VICTIMS?; LIFE IN A BAR-ROOM; LIFE HISTORIES TRACED IN TEARS AND WRITTEN IN BLOOD; SLIPPERY PLACES; TRAPS FOR THE UNWARY; PATHETIC SCENES AND INCIDENTS; HOME SHADOWS; WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR?; LIFE IN THE BACK STREETS OF NEW YORK; VOICES FROM THE SLUMS.
