She attended school first in Smithfield, and then at Newport News, Virginia, where her family moved when she was twelve. She returned to N.C. however, for a year's study at Atlantic Christian College at Wilson. A secretarial job was her goal. Fate stepped in when a photograph made by her brother-in-law won a contest at MGM and she was offered a film contract, even without acting experience. At the Metro Studio she was given speech, dramatic and dancing lessons, before making her screen debut in "We Were Dancing." Subsequently, she starred in 'The Hucksters," "The Bribe" and "East Side, West Side." Miss Gardner is currently in MGS's "Pandora and the Flying Dutchman," with James Mason.
