Description: British Parliament 1925 Vintage Lithograph ANCIENT GREECE: The Caryatids & Temple of Theseus 1901 Historical Page of History Unrelated Text on ReverseA caryatid is a sculpted female figure serving as an architectural support taking the place of a column or a pillar supporting an entablature on her head. The Greek term karyatides literally means "maidens of Karyai", an ancient town of Peloponnese. Theseum, temple in Athens dedicated to Hephaestus and Athena as patrons of the arts and crafts. Its style indicates that this, the best-preserved ancient Greek temple in the world, is slightly older than the Parthenon (i.e., c. 450–440 bc), and its unknown architect may even have changed his plan for the interior after seeing Ictinus’s Parthenon designs. The temple has been known as the Theseum since the Middle Ages, apparently because some of its sculptures represent the exploits of the hero Theseus. The Theseum is a Doric peripteral (i.e., surrounded by a single row of columns) temple, with 13 columns at the sides and 6 at the ends. from photographs taken by Sumber W. Matteson for noted travel author Burton Holmes** during the 1896 Greece Olympics ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ **Print is from one of the travel volumes of Elias Burton Holmes (1870–1958), an American traveler, photographer and filmmaker, who coined the term "travelogue". For sixty years he was America's most famous travel showman. His travels began in 1892 with a trip to Japan. He went on to travel the world until 1952. His photographs, one of which is reproduced in this print, show the world in only the way a lover of travel could. He delivered travel lectures until the age of 81, after more than 8,000 lectures. He died in 1958, but his wonder of the world continues in his photographs and works. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.History-On-PaperI am proud to have sold to customers in the following countries: Argentina - Australia - Austria - Azerbaijan Republic - Bahrain - Belgium - Bolivia - Brazil - Canada - Chile - China - Cyprus - Czech Republic – Denmark –Ecuador - Finland - France – French Guiana - Germany - Greece - Hong Kong – Hungary - Iceland - India - Ireland - Israel - Italy - Japan - Jordan - Kuwait - Latvia – Lithuania - Malta – Malaysia - Mexico - Netherlands - New Zealand - Norway - Paraguay - Philippines - Poland - Portugal - Puerto Rico – Romania – Seychelles - Singapore - Slovakia - South Africa - South Korea - Spain – Sri Lanka - Sweden - Switzerland – Taiwan - Thailand -Turkey - Ukraine - United Arab Emirates - United Kingdom - and all 50 United States.
