Antique, immediate pre US Civil War era three volume set bound in decorative period three quarters leatherbinding with marbled paper covered hardcover boards. Spine faces are decoratively hubbed and have gold gilded and embossed leather labels. Outer page fore edges are marbled as are the front and back endpapers of each volume. Volumes are externally very clean and all retain their complete structural integrity. Volumes show some very superficial rubs to the marbled planes of the front and back covers from shelf wear and somewhat heavier rubbing at the outer edges of the boards and upper and lower ends of the spine. Interiors of the books are clean with a few 19th century ink signatures, toning to the pages from age throughout and some foxing, mainly around the illustration plate pages, but also lighter here and there throughout with most text pages remaining quite bright and clean. Pages are all still very sturdy and have not brittled. Books' bindings are tight and well intact. Books are complete with all pages present and none coming loose, detached or missing. Volume I totals 618 pages. Volume II totals 610 pages and Volume III totals 476 pages. All three volumes together measures approximately 9 3/8 inches tall (volume 3 is 9 inches tall) x 5 1/8 x 5 inches and weigh together approximately 7 pounds.
