Description: MAUGHAM, W. SOMERSET. Ashenden or The British Agent. London: Published for Wm. Collins Sons, Ltd., by The London Book Co. Ltd., n.d. (1930’s). Novel Library Edition. Small format, 4 1/4 inches by 6 3/8 inches, 254 pages. The dust jacket illustration is a colorful painting of a young pretty woman in a red dress on her knees reaching up toward a handsome man in a navy suit while two other men are running toward him, one carrying a pair of handcuffs. Very good bright copy with the usual tanning of the pages and with some minor foxing to the edges in a lightly used bright dust jacket with some fading to the spine, some dust soiling, and a few small chips and tears. Queen's Quorum, Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone, both of these lists note how Ashenden was as an important landmark leap forward in spy fiction and an important influence on the writings of Ambler, Deighton, and especially Le Carre.
