A West Point graduate, Class of 1866, he commanded a cavalry troop against the Apaches in 1874 where he was severely wounded and forced to retire from active duty. However he continued his service in the Wisconsin National Guard and when the Spanish-American War began in 1898 he was appointed Brigadier General of volunteers and commanded a brigade in Lawton’s division in the Philippines. He continued in service until his death in 1932. This novel is set in the late 19th century and follows two soldiers, one from the United States and one from Australia, who become friends during the Philippine-American War. The novel explores themes of loyalty, friendship, and the bonds that are formed during times of war. The two soldiers, despite coming from different parts of the world, find common ground in their experiences as soldiers and their desire to serve their respective countries. The book also touches on the political tensions between the United States and Australia at the time, as well as the impact of war on individuals and society. Enhanced with 4 full-page illustrations on glossy paper, three by George Gibbs and one by E.W. Deming. Hardcover book in Very Good condition, tight and clean with no marks. Pages are clean and white; top edges gilded; hinges are sound. Red illustrated covers with white titles on the spine and front and an illustration on the front are bright and clean; spine sun-faded.
