Description: "Cry, the Beloved Country" by Alan Paton. 1948 Scribner's Sons. Apparent first US edition, later printing (see below). 288 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Based on the research by First Edition Points website ( https://www.fedpo.com/BookDetail.php/Cry-The-Beloved-Country ), this book meets all the criteria that identifies a first edition of this book except for one. The book has:- states 1948 on the title page- Scribner's seal/colophon on the bottom of copyright page- Boards are grey cloth with red and black decoration- First issue jacket has photo of author on the back; and title and publisher name in red text on the lower corner of back flap.(note publisher's name is NOT in red text on this book, and it is NOT in red text in the website's example of a first edition, so this must be a mistake on the description)- dust jacket where original $3.00 price (on upper right side of front flap as in picture) This book does NOT have:- an "A" below the rights and permission statement on the copyright page This evidence implies, to some other sellers on eBay at least, that this is a printing after the first but in the same year. The owner's inscription, dated Oct. 1948, implies the same thing - that this is a first edition, early (but not first) printing of this classic book. South Africa, mid 1940s, pre-apartheid. One of the most popular books in South African literature, it was filmed twice. This book was found at a suburban Chicago estate sale of a preacher with literally hundreds of books about Africa. Many books had the same previous owner's name written in them. That owner was a John L. Casteel. There is an author of religious books with that name, and I believe he was the previous / original owner of this book. The estate sale had some books written by John L. Casteel among the thousands of books in the Chicago area pastor's library. Photos are of the actual book on offer. See the photos for additional insight into content and condition of this classic of South African literature in an early US printing.
