A unique antique piece by Reinhold Hanke- double ring Ewer Founded in the Westerwald town of Höhr in 1868 by Reinhold Hanke, the firm bearing his name is considered by many to have been a pioneer in the “Historismus” style widely associated with Westerwald steins /ewers today. Following Hanke’s death in 1886, the company was run by his wife until 1901, when it was taken over by his son, August Hanke, who managed operations until his death in 1938, at which point production was effectively terminated. Hanke is renowned for pushing the envelope and trying new techniques. He was the first manufacture of Rhenish stoneware to incorporate sang-de-boeuf glazes, thereby bringing the stoneware industry into line with international taste. Hanke produced beautiful cobalt blue over gray stoneware with detailed pictures on raised relief. He gained notoriety with royals throughout Europe, winning prestigious orders to supply stoneware to Castle Eltz and Castle Stolzenfels in 1869. In 1873 he was the only Westerwalder exhibiting at the World Exhibition, held that year in Vienna. That same year the factory received a visit from Kaiserin Augusta, wife of Kaiser Wilhelm I. Following that visit he was appointed as Supplier to the Royal Court of Augusta, German Empress and Queen of Prussia, on the 8/16/1876. This particular Ewer pattern can be found in the original catalogue designs. It is in excellent condition and bears the Hanke mark and design number it was patterned from #73”. Included in the pictures is a photo from a catalogue of his original design #73. It measures approx 16” in height with an approx 9” Width and 5” diameter base. It is in excellent condition considering the age. It is without chips or repairs. At the base please note two very small hairline surface fractures around the firing hole. They are surface only and neither impact nor compromise the overall structure of the ewer. Please review the pictures - it is a beautiful antique piece! Both unique and stunning this Hanke Ewer is an example of the excellent craftsmanship and artistry that Hanke was renowned for!
