Wooden carving of “O-men” by Kawajiri Jisuke (Ryoyuki), 16.5 cm (length), 8 cm (width). I purchased this piece at an antique store in Kanda, Japan, around 1980. Kawajiri (Ryoyuki) was a master builder in Hida (Kusakabe's house in Takayama (designated as a national important cultural property)) and also an Itto-bori carver of the first rank. The box is inscribed on the front “ICHIJIKI MOKUGI ICHII MOKUGI O-MEN AOKI-KA” and on the back “Shoyusai” and his signature. Shoyusai was the seller of the masterpiece at that time, and it is thought that the Aoki family purchased this piece and passed it down from generation to generation. On the back side of the O-men, there is an inscription “Ryoyuki” by Kawajiri Jisuke, who was the author of the mask. The O-men is in beautiful condition with no major damage, although some of the masks look old.
