Description: MAGIC LANTERN Glass Slides, Lot of 60 in Case, India 1930s American Missionaries This lot includes 60 B&W and colored Magic Lantern glass slides in a wooden case, with fascinating historical and cultural provenance. They were taken by American missionaries working in the 1930's in the area of Agra, West Bengal, and specifically Raghunathpur Village, both now in the Indian State of Uttar Pradesh. The denomination the missionaries were working through is unknown. They depict various scenes of daily life revolving around a church, school, widows home and orphanage. Candid pictures of personal interest are also abundant, taken by the photographer of interesting sights one would encounter while living in India, as well as personal pictures such as picnics, tourings and outings. Even a mission wedding. Other cities or locales mentioned as being visited and photographed were Calcutta, New Delhi, Bombay, Kashmir, and Darjeeling. These slides would have been presented in lectures to the various supporting home churches, to describe the progress of their ministry. There are two different sizes. On the slides taken by the missionaries themselves (46,) the outside mounting measurements are 3-1/4" x 4". Inside measurements of the actual images are 2-1/2" x 2". Outside mountings of the slightly smaller and possibly commercial tourist slides (14) are 3-1/4" x 3-1/4." Inside measurements of the actual images are 2-1/4" x 2-3/4." Some of these are hand tinted or colorized. The slides processor of most of these, or at least the mountings, were from "The Standard Slide Bureau, W.P. Hume, Oberlin, O." (Oberlin, Ohio?) There is a handwritten inventory sheet of what many of the numbered slide depict, as well as detailed handwritten labeling on most of the slides. The condition of the slides is good; very few have cracks. The glass is clear and clean. The wooden case itself is in good condition, with dividers, nice dove tail joinery and brass hinges. Both show expected signs of use, shipping, storage and age commensurate with an item of this time period. The collection came from an estate in Wichita, KS.
