Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. This vintage kokeshi by Takao-san dates back to circa the 1970s. It features a creative "ume-do" motif and impresses with its simple, yet original design. While obviously capitalizing on the aesthetics of the Naruko School of dento kokeshi, this figurine showcases creative individuality and novelty of of style. It would be best categorized as a shingata kokeshi. (Some kokeshi artists departed from the established traditional schools, but their works remained clearly inspired by traditional kokeshi. Such neo-traditional kokeshi styles are often referred to as shingata kokeshi - indicating that the new style is an off-spring from one of the twelve canonical schools.) Kiyohara Takao was an independent and well-established craftsman born in 1916. He is considered a “mystery artist” as little is known about his background or whom he might have studied under. He lived in Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture and won multiple awards including the prestigious Prime Minister’s Prize at the All-Japan Kokeshi Contest in 1989. He was also an army pilot and he is considered to have been one of the people who helped pioneer the sosaku kokeshi movement. He is now deceased, date of passing undetermined.
