Published for the Crime Club, by Doubleday, Doran and Company, Inc. Garden City, New York: Stated First Edition, 1943. 276 pages. Book Excerpt - Front Flap: Lieutenant French suffered from a bullet wound in the side and a great ennui. He was weary unto death of people and murder. His devoted aunt, with whom he planned to spend a somnolent vacation, had other ideas by the time he arrived. She jolted and bedeviled him into doing something for Bundy Peckham, whose grandfather had mysteriously disappeared. When grandpa‘s reappearance put Bundy on the spot, Lieutenant French decided that he really should do something. Justice was all right in its way, but it was the lady’s beaux yeux and bewilderment that literally pushed him into an investigation. This story again shows Christopher Hale’s capacity for character drawing: an Ebony cook in a cerise satin dress who “hadn’t meant no harm” with conjuring powder; a wheelchair invalid with a Barrymore profile and an amused contempt for the law; Bill’s aunt, who distributed largesse on a grand scale and looked as though the crows had been after her, all make the development of this mystery story a well-rounded tale of people as well as action and clues. This novel has not been serialized in any form prior to book publication. ***** Thanks for visiting, and have a beautiful day! shelf-13
