Description: Original, published LGBTQ cartoon art by Montero. Back in the late 60’s, I struggled as an underground cartoonist while attending University of Wisconsin. To help pay my tuition, I approached a fledgling mens magazine that was attempting to follow in the footsteps of Playboy and Penthouse; Gallery Magazine. For the next 5 years, it provided me with a steady income. While the bulk of my work was blantantly hetero, the adult magazines of this era were already pushing the boundaries of sexuality. They asked me come up with a gay themed cartoon,…and the result is the subject of this offering. Back then the LGBTQ movement had a different moniker, The Gay Liberation Front. Ergo the subject of the pictured work. A bit of history for those so inclined. The cartoon itself is pen and ink with water color, the art itself being 9”x 7”. I don’t recall the month of publication but the year was 1973. It occurred to me that given the new mood of our times ,…that this cartoon might find an appreciative home.
