Condition: Not examined out of frame but painting appears in very good overall condition with no fading of coloring. Biography and notes: Berne Potter Haines (American, 20th century) Berne Potter studied under Will Barnet, Robert Gwathmey, and Morris Kantor at the Art Student's League and Cooper Union in New York City. She had her first one-man show at the Carlebach Gallery in New York c. 1948. Together with her husband, Norman Stanley Potter (1926–1970), she was also active in the antique world, in addition to Julius Carlebach she became friends with other important gallerists and collectors, including Melvin Gutman of Cole Galleries, Ltd., New York. "Norman Stanley Potter was a prominent mathematician and engineer, who participated in the Manhattan Project and later was a designer of complex defense systems. Together with his wife, the abstract artist Berne Potter, he was active in the art and antique worlds of New York and became friends with important gallerists and collectors, including Julius Carlebach and Melvin Gutman of Cole Galleries, Ltd., New York." - Julius Hirsch Carlebach owned the Carlebach Gallery, also known as the Julius Carlebach Gallery, in New York. In addition to selling ancient art from around the world different time periods, Carlebach represented modern primitive artists. Roy Lichtenstein had his first exhibition at Carlebach Gallery in 1951.
