After holding several government positions in the years following, including stints as a Judge and Congressman for the state of Tennessee, he was later appointed Brevet Major General in the U.S. Army during the War of 1812 and the Seminole Wars. His most famous exploit, and biggest claim to fame prior to the presidency, was without a doubt the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. Jackson, or "Old Hickory" as he'd had become known amongst his troops, had became a national war hero. A few years later, after Spanish surrender in Pensacola, Jackson claimed the Territory of Florida for the United States and became its first territorial governor in 1821.
