Grant would finish his memoirs on July 18, 1885, just five days before his death from throat cancer. Following word of the Generals death, advance orders of the memoirs would reach an astounding 300,000 sets. Condition: 8vo. 9.25" x 6.50" ~ Vol 1., 584 pages; Vol. 2, 647 pages with index and complete with the engraved portrait frontispiece and etched plate with tissue guard in each volume. Numerous steel engravings, 43 maps, facsimile manuscript plates, a folding map at the rear of Volume II and the facsimile letter of Grant's original terms for Lee's surrender that is often missing. Publisher's deluxe brown half Morocco with the spine lettered and gilt in compartments, gilt roundels to the front & rear boards, marbled endpages with matching page edges. Wear to the edges with leather corner tips rubbed, a few spots to the cloth boards, wear along the leather joints and rubbing and wear to the spines with some chipping to the spine tips and some loss to the leather on the upper spine end of Volume II. Hinges are a bit loose with the hinges of Volume 1 cracked, and an unfortunate dampstain running along the lower half of the preliminary pages of Volume I, which impacts the frontis and title page and is also visible on the lower edge of a few other pages.
