(1833-1898) IN THE TATE GALLERY, LONDON The story of the medieval Saint Elizabeth of Hungary provided the painter with the theme for this picture. It was, indeed, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1 89 1, with the title "St. Elizabeth of Hungary's Great Act of Renunciation," and the catalogue contained a summary of the account of the incident as narrated by Dietrich, the earliest writer upon the life of the Saint. It was upon the work of this author that Charles Kingsley based " The Saint's Tragedy," in which he retold the story of the Princess-Saint—her purity, devotion, charity and love. The incident illustrated by the artist is thus recounted by Dietrich On Good Friday, when the altars were exhibited bare in remembrance of the Saviour who hung bare on the cross for us, she went into a certain chapel, and in the presence of Master Conrad, and certain Franciscan brothers, laying her holy hands on the bare altar, renounced her own will, her parents, children, relations, and all pomps of this kind, in imitation of Christ ; and stripped herself utterly naked to follow Him naked, in the steps of poverty." Kingsley, of course, enlarges upon this in his drama ; and in Act iv., i., gives a thrilling translation of the scene in the chapel. Elizabeth, under the influence of Conrad of Marburg, the Popes Commissioner, makes her great renunciation in the following impassioned words "All worldly goods and wealth which once I loved I now do count but dross: and my beloved— The children of my womb, I now regard As if they were another's : God is my witness My pride is to despise myself; my joy All insults, sneers, and slanders of mankind; No creature now I love, but God a!one. Oh to be clear, clear, clear, of all but Him Lo, here I strip me of all earthly helps— (Tearing aff her clothes) Naked, and barefoot, through the world to follow My naked Lord."
