Wholesale Lot of 10 - Vintage, Original 1910s Can Labels - Defender Tomatoes

Description: For Sale are 10 Can Labels, "Defender Brand Tomatoes," 1913-1918, as Shown in Listing Photos The era of vibrant, eye-catching product labels began with the development of lithography. Using this printing technique, late 19th and early 20th-century product labels became colorful works of art. Skilled lithographers created these labels for packing companies to attract customers and encourage them to choose their products over competitors'. The labels offered for sale were produced for Defender Brand Tomatoes. Defender Packing Company, established around 1910 by brothers Anthony and George Adams, was located north of Trappe, Maryland. The beautiful labels available feature a vibrant tomato on the front and what appears to be a skipjack, a traditional fishing boat used on the Chesapeake Bay, on the back. These are original labels, not copies or digitally-created works. Though they were intended to be glued onto cans, they were never used. The label design was crafted by Simpson and Doeller, a renowned lithograph company based in Baltimore, Maryland. The Baseball Negro Leagues ConnectionInterestingly, this label is linked to Negro League baseball. In 1912, Edward C. Lastner, an employee of Simpson and Doeller, approached his boss about sponsoring an industrial-league baseball team. With the company's $100 sponsorship, Lastner and his friends raised an additional $350 to construct a baseball grandstand in northeast Baltimore. The field was named after the company's team, the Label Men—a fitting name for a lithographic company. The Label Men won the Baltimore city championship four times between 1912 and 1917. Around 1924, the ballpark was purchased by Joe Cambria, a scout for the Washington Senators, who renamed it Bugle Field. The Negro League's Baltimore Black Sox began playing games at Bugle Field in 1930. Later, in 1938, another Negro League team, the Baltimore Elite Giants, arrived and made Bugle Field their home park.
