Description: Erich Raeder, the Commander-in-Chief of the Kriegsmarine, became Admiral General in 1936. In order to avoid Raeder having a higher rank than the then commanders-in-chief of the Luftwaffe (Colonel General Hermann Göring) and the army (Colonel General Werner von Fritsch), the rank of Admiral General was introduced. The originally intended rank of Grand Admiral as Commander-in-Chief of the Navy was "postponed" and a special flag was introduced for a Commander-in-Chief who was not a Grand Admiral (this flag). Raeder was promoted to Grand Admiral in 1939, so that although the special flag was not officially abolished, it was no longer used, especially as Raeder's successor, Karl Dönitz, skipped the rank of Admiral General in 1943 and was immediately appointed Grand Admiral by the Admiral. Flag measures 1.0 X 1.0 meter and has excellent markings. Most likely a flag used in the late 1930’s since that certain red naval stamp and blue criss cross markings on the hoist weren’t seen after 1940. Very little mothing and no major issues.
