Description: WW1 (1917) 3rd Battle of YPRES (PASSCHENDAELE) related INFANTRY TRENCH MAP SHEET 20 SE1 entitled "STADEN" (Scale 1:10,000) Edition 2A This map was produced during the Battle of Passchendaele in readiness for the planned operation to push all the way to the Belgian coast and secure deep water ports further East. The capture of Passchendaele Ridge was intended to clear the route to ROULERS and THOUROUT. From there, the Allies hoped to utilise the intact rail network in order to advance rapidly in conjunction with amphibious operations further North. STADEN lies on the main YPRES to THOUROUT rail line and was a main area of concern for the Allies regarding German resupply and troop reinforcements. The trench corrections recorded are four weeks into the main Battle and have been overprinted on a September 1917 template. (Amongst my other listings are some incredibly rare October 1917 templates for the other post-Passchendaele targets which were never overprinted due to the Battle grinding to a halt. The areas had not been surveyed by the British and so they were produced using the original Belgian plates.)Whilst there are some important German sites recorded on this map, most notably supply and ammunition dumps at 'Sleijhage', there aren't many earthworks visible - with the main defensive line being a series of barbed wire entanglements running North to South across the map. This shows the ambition of the wider plan in that these vital supply areas were a good distance behind the frontline, and perhaps not considered in danger by the German high command.Produced on linen backed paper and is in very good 'field used' condition (with a small handwritten museum archive serial number in the top right corner) as explained below... This map is one of many acquired from a private collection which was previously purchased in 2002 from The Imperial War Museum. Each item was held in the museum's duplicate archives and deemed surplus. Almost all have IWM stock numbers or stamps etc and many have been linen backed for long term conservation and storage purposes. Significant numbers were unused surplus stock when originally transferred to the museum and have never even been folded. As such, many of these original WW1 maps are in 'time capsule' condition, and there are numerous 'Secret' or 'Confidential' maps relating to major battles amongst them. I will be working my way through the collection in due course. POSTAGE - Will be sent using Royal Mail's Guaranteed Delivery by 1pm Service which will adequately cover the insurance cost of the item.
